Game-Theoretic Foundations for Argumentation

چکیده

Game theory is becoming central to the design and analysis of computational mechanisms in which multiple entities interact strategically. In particular, the tools of mechanism design are used extensively to engineer incentives for truth-revelation into resource-allocation and preferenceaggregation protocols, as evident in the work on combinatorial auctions and voting. On the other hand, traditionally, the design of logical reasoning procedures assumes that all logical formulae are available a priori for reasoning by a single agent. However, for reasoning using knowledge obtained from different entities in an open system (e.g. the Semantic Web), incentives are clearly equally important. Just as an auction is a rule that maps the bids of different agents into a social outcome by allocating resources, an inference procedure can map logical formulae revealed by different agents into logical conclusions. It is somewhat surprising that, to date, very little systematic investigation of incentives has been applied in the context of logical inference when formulae are distributed among self-interested agents. Against this background, we ask: how do we engineer inference procedures with desirable incentive properties, when knowledge is distributed among strategic agents? A general answer to this question requires a new paradigm, and is beyond a single paper. Our aim is to motivate such paradigm by exploring the question in the context of Dung’s abstract argumentation theory, which generalises a variety of nonmonotonic logics. We introduce Argumentation Mechanism Design (ArgMD), in which argument evaluation procedures are viewed as games with different agents deciding which arguments to reveal. We then undertake a detailed case study of the strategic properties of grounded semantics under different conditions. We close by making general remarks about how this framework may be further generalised.

Extensive-Form Argumentation Games

Two prevalent approaches to automated negotiation are the application of game-theoretic notions and the argumentation-based angle; these two schemes are frequently at odds. An elegant view of argumentation is Dung’s abstract argumentation theory [2], which cold-shoulders the internal structure of arguments in favor of the entire debate’s global structure. Dung’s theory is elaborated by work in ...

Game-Theoretic Approach for Pricing Decisions in Dual-Channel Supply Chain

In the current study, a dual-channel supply chain is considered containing one manufacturer and two retailers. It is assumed that the manufacturer and retailers have the same decision powers. A game-theoretic approach is developed to analyze pricing decisions under the centralized and decentralized scenarios. First, the Nash model is established to obtain the equilibrium decisions in the decent...

NGTSOM: A Novel Data Clustering Algorithm Based on Game Theoretic and Self- Organizing Map

Identifying clusters is an important aspect of data analysis. This paper proposes a noveldata clustering algorithm to increase the clustering accuracy. A novel game theoretic self-organizingmap (NGTSOM ) and neural gas (NG) are used in combination with Competitive Hebbian Learning(CHL) to improve the quality of the map and provide a better vector quantization (VQ) for clusteringdata. Different ...

1 University of Edinburgh School of Informatics Agent Argumentation under Time Pressure

Automated argumentation is believed to be a more powerful approach to interaction between agents than game-theoretic and heuristic-based approaches. However, during argumentation agents spend a lot of time to ensure their arguments are safe. The paper attempts to find the reasons that slow down the argument generation process by considering a simple multi agent game – Diplomacy. The research is...

A Game Theoretic Approach for Sustainable Power Systems Planning in Transition

Intensified industrialization in developing countries has recently resulted in huge electric power demand growth; however, electricity generation in these countries is still heavily reliant on inefficient and traditional non-renewable technologies. In this paper, we develop an integrated game-theoretic model for effective power systems planning thorough balancing between supply and demand for e...
